From the Director of Liturgy and Music

Mark Steinbach, DMA
Organist and Choirmaster

Please join us for worship this Holy Week and Easter season! Special music offered by St. Paul's Parish Choir this year features:

Passion Sunday Salvator Mundi, by English composer John Blow(1649 – 1708), a teacher of Henry Purcell. The joyous motet "Pueri Hebraeorum" by the Spaniard Tomas Victoria (1548 – 1611) will be presented at the Liturgy of the Palms along with an anthem by the youth and children's choirs.

Maundy Thursday A new setting of Ubi caritas by American composer Morten Lauridsen, and the moving Tantum ergo by the 19thc. Austrian composer Anton Bruckner.

Good Friday at 2 pm The Passion according to St. John set to Gregorian Chant; Renaissance motets Crux fidelis of John IV of Portugal and Adoramus te by Orlando di Lasso.

The Easter services will feature a guest brass quartet and the joyous anthem “Worthy is the Lamb,” from Handel's Messiah. The Parish Choir will also offer the sublime Gloria and Sanctus from Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly's Missa Brevis. Kodaly's rich harmonies belie his studies with French composer Widor, whose celebrated Toccata you will hear as the closing voluntary on Easter Day.

St. Paul's Youth Choir will be joined by the Children's Choir celebrating Easter Day at the Old Narragansett Church. Thank you directors Rozanne Fuller and Nancy Sherman for your tireless leadership! Thank you Bonnie and Joe Smith for assembling a group of fine musicians to lead that service. Kudos to Ray and Nick Jorgensen for leading the Easter Sunrise Service. Thank you Kevin O'Connor and Buddy Cavaleri for providing musical leadership for the Easter 5:15 service. Finally thank you Jessye-Ray Leich and Pat Petersen who are present every single Sunday morning at 8:30 making beautiful music! Thank you to each member of the choir at 8 and St. Paul's Parish Choir who gives your time and talents to the glory of God. St. Paul's is what it is because of all of our dedicated volunteers who give heart, mind and soul! Thank you!

The season of Easter lasts for 50 days, and we will keep celebrating! St. Paul’s youth choir will participate in the all-state festival Evensong, April 29 at 4 pm at St. Luke's Church in East Greenwich. Thank you to all of the participants and parents who have worked hard all year to make this wonderful event happen, and not least of all to our very able youth choir Director, Rozanne Fuller. Youth choir member Sarah Cavaleri sang a beautiful solo with our guest organist Annie Laver at "Music for Reflection," in March. Thank you to our hospitality team Ann Waring, Jackie Gildersleeve, Barbara Vollmar and Betsy Steinman for providing an EXQUISITE reception! Peace,

Mark
