“Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky;
Heav’n thunders forth its victor cry;
The glad earth shouts her triumph high,
And groaning hell makes wild reply,
While He the King…brings forth His ransomed Saints to light…”
~ 7th century Latin, translated by John Mason Neele, 1851 ~
Please join us for worship! Special Music for Holy Week at St. Paul’s features:
Palm Sunday O vos omnes by cellist and composer Pablo Casals (1876-1973), who was exiled from fascist Spain and made his home in Puerto Rico.
Maundy Thursday Ubi caritas by Parisian Maurice Duruflé, and the moving Tantum ergo by 17thc. Bolognese composer Giovanni Colonna.
Good Friday at 2 pm The Passion according to St. John to traditional plainsong; Renaissance motets Crux fidelis of John IV of Portugal and Adoramus te by Orlano di Lasso.
The Easter services will feature guest musicians and the joyous anthem “Light’s glittering morn bedecks the sky,” composed by American Horatio Parker (1863-1919). Parker, a student of Rheinberger in Munich, taught at Yale and was also long-time organist at Trinity Church, Boston. The Parish Choir will also offer the brilliant and rhythmic driving “Organ solo Mass, K. 259” of W.A. Mozart, which Mozart wrote during his early years in Salzburg.
The season of Easter lasts for 50 days, and we will keep celebrating! St. Paul’s will be hosting five youth choirs from the Diocese for a festival Evensong, April 29 at 4 pm. The Evensong will include a premiere of a new Anglican Chant composed for the event by yours truly in honor of our 300th anniversary year. A reception in the Parish House and tours of the Old Narragansett Church will follow. This promises to be an uplifting event!
A blessed Holy Week and Easter to all!
