From the Director of Liturgy and Music
Mark Steinbach, DMA
Organist and Choirmaster
St. Paul’s Youth Choir joined over 40 children and youth from across the state at St. Paul’s, Pawtucket in February for our midwinter rehearsal for the upcoming Allstate Evensong. The special guest conductor for the Evensong in April will be the choirmaster of the National Cathedral. He will be bringing about 12 of his choristers along for the event, which will take place April 27 at 4 pm in Pawtucket. What an exciting opportunity to sing with other choirs from various Episcopal Churches! Please contact me (294-4357, ext. 106) or Rozanne Fuller (* number on request) if you have a child 3rd grade or older who would like to participate; it’s not too late to join up! The Youth and Children’s Choirs will also be singing Easter Day service at the Old Narragansett Church at 8:30 am.
Nancy Sherman is leading St. Paul’s newly formed Children’s Choir for kindergarteners through 3rd grade. Please let her know if you are interested in joining (* email address available on request). I’m so grateful to both Nancy and Rozanne for sharing their talents with the church by offering these rehearsals on Sundays at 10 am. Their teaching is truly a gift of love in action! Thank you!
The Parish Choir is girding its loins for Easter and Holy Week. If you are unsure of my choice of metaphor, you will know why after hearing the triumphant “Messe sollenellede Sancte Cécile” (or Mass for St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music) on Easter Day. This grande Mass composed by Charles Gounod (1818-1839) “pulls out all the stops” plus brass quartet, strings, percussion, and organ.
Before the glitzy roar of Easter Day, please join us in the quieter services of Holy Week: Maundy Thursday, the singing of the Passion of St. John on Good Friday or the chanting of the Exultet and Haydn’s celebratory “Asperges me” as we are sprinkled with the new water of baptism, reminding us of our baptismal covenant.
The members of the choirs and volunteer instrumentalists at St. Paul’s are an amazing group of people. It is a joy to serve with them.
Peace,Mark
