a recycling primer
Environmental stewardship is an important part of our mandate from God to take good care of the earth and the creatures in it. One way we can all participate daily in this important mission is by recycling our household waste. North Kingstown participates in maximum recycling, which means that much, if not most, of our household “trash” can actually be recycled. This will reduce the amount of trash that ultimately has to go to the landfill. St. Paul’s recycling committee (“The Green Team”) would like to help by reminding us of the recycling basics. Below is a summary of instructions for recycling in North Kingstown.
- metal, such as cans (rinsed) and wire hangers
- glass bottles and jars: rinsed with lids off (recycle lids)
- plastic: all #1 plastic as well as #2 plastic bottles (such as bleach bottles), rinsed with caps off (toss caps)
- drink cartons milk & juice cartons, juice boxes: rinsed with lids off (toss lids & straws)
- mixed paper: includes magazines, paperbacks, and junk mail (envelopes with windows are ok)
- newspapers, including inserts: place in bin separately from mixed paper (use brown paper bags or string to separate)
- corrugated cardboard – no pizza boxes or other cardboard that came in direct contact with food
- thin cardboard, such as cereal boxes, pasta boxes, and egg cartons – may be placed with mixed paper.
